Nespresso Original running costs: what does a cup cost?
A capsule’s price is only one part of the cost of making coffee at home. The machine purchase is spread over the cups you prepare, and required care can add to the running cost. Your drink size and the number of capsules used for each preparation matter too.
This guide uses Nespresso Original as the capsule system. Original and Vertuo are different systems: Nespresso says Original machines use Original pods. If you own a different system, do not apply an Original capsule price or compatibility claim to it. The Nespresso CitiZ is one Original-machine example; its standard buttons prepare Espresso and Lungo sizes. A larger or double-capsule drink is a different serving profile, even if both drinks are called a “cup.”
Begin with the ingredient cost
Divide the price of a compatible capsule pack by its capsule count, then multiply by the capsules you actually use per prepared cup.
For a made-up £4 pack of 10 capsules, one capsule costs 40p. A one-capsule preparation has 40p of coffee ingredient cost; a two-capsule preparation has 80p. These are teaching inputs, not a current Nespresso price, a CitiZ default or a recommendation to use two capsules.
Use your own receipt or current pack offer in the Coffee Machine Cost Calculator. Keep pack size and price together; a larger pack is only cheaper per capsule if the arithmetic says so.
Add the machine over the cups you will make
This second illustration adds a made-up £150 machine purchase and assumes 12 months of use. All figures use the made-up 40p capsule above. “Cups” here means completed preparations with the stated capsule count, not a fixed liquid volume.
| Prepared cups each month | Capsules per preparation | Cups in 12 months | Coffee ingredient subtotal | Machine + coffee subtotal | Machine + coffee per cup |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 | 1 | 360 | £144.00 | £294.00 | £0.82 |
| 30 | 2 | 360 | £288.00 | £438.00 | £1.22 |
| 60 | 1 | 720 | £288.00 | £438.00 | £0.61 |
| 60 | 2 | 720 | £576.00 | £726.00 | £1.01 |
For example, at 30 one-capsule preparations a month: 30 × 12 × £0.40 = £144 coffee, plus £150 machine = £294 over one year. Dividing by 360 cups gives £0.8166…, displayed as £0.82. At 60 cups a month, that same fixed purchase is divided across twice as many cups. This does not mean drinking more saves money overall: the one-capsule total rises from £294 to £438.
These are purchase-plus-coffee subtotals, not complete ownership costs. They do not credit any verified, stable starter supply and do not include descaling, other required care, milk, accessories or any applicable delivery charge. Do not use them as a named-machine TrueCost result or a product comparison.
Include the care your model requires
Care timing should follow the exact machine manual and local water/usage conditions. Nespresso’s general descaling guide directs owners to the model manual for the procedure. A care product price without a reproducible quantity and frequency is not enough to calculate a complete care cost. Never silently treat unknown care as free.
The calculator asks for the applicable machine and care inputs. Its headline ownership cost uses prorated included costs; a separate scheduled view may show whole pack purchases. Electricity is currently excluded. Optional milk is off by default and should be entered consistently if you want it counted. Missing required values can make a complete result unavailable.
Compare a pod machine fairly
A pod machine can have a lower purchase cost yet higher coffee cost per preparation than another system. To compare, match the beverage family, prepared volume, cups per month, horizon, acquisition boundary and enabled costs. Record the capsules or dose used by each option; these quantities can differ and are part of the cost calculation. Our pod versus bean-to-cup guide demonstrates why an ingredient-only crossover is not a complete ownership result. Use the calculator for your own entered scenario; no current machine or capsule price is prefilled here.
Common questions
Does a two-capsule drink cost twice as much?
Its coffee ingredient cost doubles if the same capsule price is used twice. Machine purchase per prepared cup does not double, and care or milk need separate inputs.
Can I use Vertuo pods in an Original machine?
No. Nespresso identifies Original and Vertuo as different capsule systems. Check your exact machine and capsule format before buying.
Is the table a current Nespresso price comparison?
No. Every £4 pack and £150 purchase in the table is an invented teaching value. Current prices, offers and care frequency must be entered for your own situation.
