Bean-to-cup cost per cup: what should you include?
The price of coffee beans is a useful starting point, but it is not the whole cost of a cup. How much coffee you use for each prepared drink, how often you use the machine, its purchase price and its required care all affect ownership cost per cup.
This guide focuses on a fully automatic bean-to-cup machine. Philips describes this type as making coffee from fresh beans at the touch of a button. A semi-automatic espresso machine with an integrated grinder involves a different preparation workflow, even though both use beans. Compare the same kind of prepared drink before comparing costs.
Calculate the coffee ingredient cost
Divide the price of a bag by its weight in grams, then multiply by the grams of beans used per prepared drink:
Bean ingredient cost per cup = bag price ÷ bag grams × grams used per cup.
For a made-up £20 bag of 1,000 g, each gram costs 2p. At a hypothetical 10 g per preparation, beans cost 20p; at 18 g, they cost 36p. These doses are teaching inputs, not a recipe, a Philips setting, a measured default or a current bean price. Record your actual bag size, price and dose. A double shot or larger drink may need a different amount of coffee and must not be silently treated as the same preparation.
The Coffee Machine Cost Calculator lets you enter your own bean price, bag quantity and dose for an available machine.
Spread the machine purchase over your usage
The table adds a made-up £400 machine purchase to those bean costs for 12 months. It assumes every stated cup is one complete preparation with the stated dose. The examples contain no starter-bean credit.
| Cups each month | Beans per preparation | Cups in 12 months | Bean subtotal | Machine + beans subtotal | Machine + beans per cup |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 | 10 g | 360 | £72.00 | £472.00 | £1.31 |
| 30 | 18 g | 360 | £129.60 | £529.60 | £1.47 |
| 60 | 10 g | 720 | £144.00 | £544.00 | £0.76 |
| 60 | 18 g | 720 | £259.20 | £659.20 | £0.92 |
For example, 30 cups a month for 12 months gives 360 cups. At 10 g each, that is 3,600 g of beans; at £20 per 1,000 g, the beans cost £72. Add £400 for the machine and the subtotal is £472, or £1.3111… per prepared cup, shown as £1.31. At the same usage but 18 g, the bean subtotal rises by £57.60.
More cups spread the fixed purchase over more preparations, so purchase plus beans per cup can fall while the overall amount spent rises. At 10 g, the 12-month subtotal is £472 for 30 cups a month and £544 for 60.
These are purchase-plus-beans subtotals, not complete ownership costs. They exclude required filters, cleaning, descaling, other care, optional milk, delivery, any separate required equipment and electricity. They are not results for a named machine and do not establish a cheapest model.

Add care for the exact machine
Care should follow the manual and the prompts for the machine you own. For example, the Philips 4300/5400 manual covers EP5446 and says an activated AquaClean filter should be replaced when prompted or at least every three months; it also says the filter reduces the need for descaling rather than removing it. The machine displays a descaling message when a cycle is required. Those instructions are model-family evidence, not a universal bean-to-cup care schedule or a default descaling frequency for this example.
To estimate complete ownership, use the actual filter or cleaning pack price, quantity and applicable timing, including any verified supplied starter item. Do not enter zero for an unknown care price or schedule. The calculator's headline estimate uses prorated included costs; its scheduled cash view can differ because whole packs are bought. Optional milk is off by default and electricity is excluded.
Compare it with a pod machine
Beans may cost less per ingredient serving than capsules in a particular scenario, but a higher purchase price and different care can change the ownership result. Match drink family, prepared volume, cups per month, time horizon and enabled costs. Our pod versus bean-to-cup guide shows a labelled purchase-and-coffee crossover; the Nespresso Original running-cost guide works through one- and two-capsule preparations. Neither illustration supplies current product prices. Enter your own complete inputs in the calculator before treating a result as a purchase decision.
Common questions
Does changing the dose change only the bean cost?
For a fixed number of prepared cups, it changes the bean ingredient subtotal in this illustration. Machine purchase per cup stays the same. Actual care and other enabled costs need their own inputs.
Is the lower cost per cup at 60 cups a saving?
It is a lower average after spreading the same £400 purchase over more cups. The total 12-month spending in the table is higher at 60 cups than at 30 for the same dose.
Does AquaClean make descaling free or unnecessary?
No. The Philips manual says it reduces descaling need and provides a displayed descaling prompt. A filter and any prompted descaling are separate care inputs when applicable to the exact machine.
