Pod vs bean-to-cup coffee costs: make a fair comparison
A lower coffee ingredient cost can offset a higher machine purchase price, but only after enough comparable cups. A fair comparison includes the same drink profile, usage and period, plus the machine’s required care and any milk you choose to include.
The Coffee Machine Cost Calculator includes the Nespresso CitiZ XN741B40, Philips 5400 EP5446/70 and Sage Barista Express BES875UK/SES875. They offer different preparation workflows; the lowest ownership cost for an entered scenario does not establish the best taste, quality or convenience.
Start with the coffee you actually prepare
Compare the same beverage family, prepared volume and number of shots. A single espresso should not be treated as equivalent to a larger or double-shot drink simply because each is described as one cup.
For capsules, ingredient cost depends on pack price, capsule count and capsules used per preparation. For beans, it depends on pack price, grams in the pack and the dose in grams per preparation. Nespresso’s Original range is intended for Original machines; capsule format must match the exact machine. Do not substitute Vertuo capsules for an Original-machine scenario.

A transparent purchase-and-coffee illustration
The following numbers are invented teaching inputs, not prices or results for the three named machines. The bean dose is a synthetic input, not a recommended recipe or a manufacturer default.
| Input | Capsule illustration | Bean illustration |
|---|---|---|
| Machine purchase | £150.00 | £400.00 |
| Coffee pack | £4 for 10 capsules | £20 for 1,000 g |
| Coffee per preparation | 1 capsule | 10 g |
| Ingredient cost per cup | 40p | 20p |
| Period | 36 months | 36 months |
| Cups per month | Capsule purchase + coffee | Bean purchase + coffee | First whole crossover month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 | £582.00 | £616.00 | None within 36 months |
| 100 | £1,590.00 | £1,120.00 | 13 |
| 200 | £3,030.00 | £1,840.00 | 7 |
At 100 cups a month, the ingredient saving is £20 a month against a £250 purchase premium. Month 12 totals are £630 and £640; month 13 totals are £670 and £660.
These are purchase-plus-coffee subtotals, not complete TrueCost ownership results. They omit starter coffee, required care and any required new grinder, as well as milk. Actual care and acquisition boundaries can shift or remove the crossover. The calculator’s complete result is the appropriate basis once all required values are entered.
Add milk consistently
Select “Include milk costs” if you want milk included. Enter its pack price, pack quantity and milk used per cup. The same enabled milk basis applies to every selected machine, so it does not create an artificial advantage for one option.
For example, £1.60 per 1,000 ml at 120 ml per cup contributes 19.2p of milk per cup. At 30 cups a month for 12 months, that is £69.12. These are illustrative visitor inputs, not a current milk-price claim.
Read the two cost views carefully
The headline uses prorated costs. The scheduled cash-purchase view counts whole packs and care purchases, so it can differ from the headline estimate. Electricity remains excluded. Missing required inputs or incompatible profiles must not produce a directional winner or a break-even claim.
Common questions
Are beans always cheaper than pods?
No. Pack prices, dose, usage, purchase cost and care determine the entered scenario.
Does a milk setting mean every machine has a milk frother?
No. It adds the entered ingredient cost. Check each machine’s preparation capabilities and any additional equipment separately.
Why might comparison be unavailable?
The inputs may be incomplete or the drink profiles and other comparison boundaries may not match. Standalone estimates do not make those scenarios equivalent.
